Northwest Indiana Business News LogoWESTVILLE – The Purdue University Northwest Sinai Forum concludes its 64th season with author and researcher David Epstein, at 4 p.m. (CST), Sunday, Dec. 3 in the James B. Dworkin Student Services and Activities Complex on the Westville Campus.

The complex is located at 1401 S. US 421. The doors open at 3 p.m.

PNW Sinai Forum Executive Director Leslie Plesac hosts the Sinai Forum series, which presents guest speakers who explore today’s compelling issues.  Audience members have a unique opportunity to hear from experts in their fields and to pose face-to-face questions in a town-hall style forum.

The Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance

Epstein will tackle the great nature vs. nurture debate and trace how far science has come in solving it. His research helped to rethink the very nature of athleticism.

As a writer covering science, medicine, and sports and frequently combining all three in the same project, Epstein will share the story of his book, “The Sports Gene,” which discusses the effects of genetics and sports training on human athleticism.

Research, conversations with leading scientists and Olympic champions, along with interviews with athletes who have rare genetic mutations or physical traits, helped Epstein to take a different took at the nature of athleticism.

As writer for ProPublica, an online investigative news source, and a former senior writer for “Sports Illustrated,” Epstein co-authored the 2009 report that Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez had used steroids. His science writing has earned a number of awards and his book, “The Sports Gene,” is a “New York Times” bestseller.
