University of Chicago Medicine cut the ribbon Thursday night on its new 131,565-square-foot building in Crown Point.

About 200 people were on hand for the event, including health system leaders and elected officials.

The two-story multispecialty care center is UChicago Medicine's first stand-alone facility in Indiana and the largest outside of the health system's main Hyde Park campus in Chicago. Construction of the facility cost about $121 million.

“Based on a market assessment, UChicago Medicine found that about 15% of Northwest Indiana patients travel outside the Region for medical care,” according to a UChicago fact sheet. “Of that group, roughly 1 in 5 visit the health system’s facilities in and around Chicago.”

UChicago Medicine has been committed to the Region with locations in Merrillville, Munster and Schererville. Facilities at the current Crown Point location will be moved into the new facility. Oncology facilities in Chesterton and Valparaiso will remain at their current locations.

The Crown Point facility at 10855 Virginia St. officially opened to patients April 29. It includes doctors' offices for youth and adults, a cancer care center, a small inpatient unit and emergency department, imaging center, advanced laboratory services and access to clinical trials. Patient capacity is 110,000 visits a year.

The facility employs about 200 staff members.

California-based PMB and Chicago-based Perkins&Will developed and constructed the space.

UChicago Medicine is a not-for-profit health system with history dating back to 1927. It is based on the campus of the University of Chicago in Hyde Park, Chicago. The health system unites five organizations: Pritzker School of Medicine, Biological Sciences Division, Medical Center, Community Health and Hospital Division, and UChicago Medicine Physicians.
