The Gary Chamber of Commerce is hosting its eighth annual World Civility Day on April 11.

The chamber calls World Civility Day a celebration of the Golden Rule — the concept of treating others as one would want to be treated. The day will feature civility-themed events, workshops, a vendor fair and an evening awards dinner.

Deryl McKissack, chairwoman and CEO of McKissack & McKissack, will be the speaker for the awards dinner. McKissack & McKissack is a national architecture, engineering and construction management firm. McKissack founded the company in 1990 on a budget of $1,000 and a business plan she wrote herself.

The chamber will celebrate the day with workshops from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and lunch at the Dean and Barbara White Community Center in Merrillville. Workshop themes will include civility in the classroom and in the workplace.

The awards dinner starts at 6 p.m. at the Avalon Manor in Merrillville. The dinner will feature speakers and awards presented by Community Civility Counts. More information about the day’s events is available here.

The Gary Chamber of Commerce is an organization comprised of business owners, community leaders and citizens. Together, they promote community development and work to improve the economic, civic and cultural well-being of the area.
