La Porte Mayor Tom Dermody, representatives of the La Porte Economic Advancement Partnership (LEAP), elected officials, community partners and Surf team members celebrated the milestone with a ribbon cutting May 3.

“This collaboration is a shining example of how we can work closely with rural and underserved communities to provide residents with the best innovations out there,” said Gene Crusie, Surf CEO, in a press release.

Dermody said internet that is high speed and low cost is now a necessity.

“As we work toward our goal of ‘30 by 30’ — that’s 30,000 residents by the year 2030 — the ability to call ourselves a multi-gig city will be instrumental in attracting businesses big and small to set up shop right here in La Porte,” he said.

Customers who use Surf's 2 Gig plan will notice faster uploads and downloads of data, especially useful when using multiple devices for e-learning, working from home, among other tasks, the company said.

La Porte County was named a Broadband Ready Community by the state in January 2022.
