MERRILLVILLE — The Northwest Indiana Literacy Coalition (NWILC) and Books to Bridge the Region (B2BR) made their annual presentation to area school superintendents at the Study Council meeting held in the Merrillville High School Freshmen Center. This year’s presentation noted that the Time Out for Reading (TOFR) literacy promotion is being held in seven counties, 56 cities and towns, and 435 schools and libraries in Indiana.  The effort continues to grow every year.

Ms. Dian Reyome, President of the NWILC and Centier’ s Financial Capabilities Coordinator, and Ms. Linda Swisher, Public Information Coordinator for the Hammond Public Library and representing B2BR, spoke before the Study Council members.  The ladies also promoted NWILC’s Photo/Video Recognition Awards Event which will be held November 12, 2013 at 6 pm at the Lake County Public Library in Merrillville.  The deadline for these entries is October 21, 2013.  More information can be found on this effort at http://www.nwiliteracy.org/events/tofr/tofr.html.

Each superintendent was given a “Literacy Kit Bag” which contained “Put Your Nose in a Book” materials including red clown noses, lapel pins, bookmarks, details on the B2BR literacy events and information on observing Time Out for Reading (TOFR) on October 4, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. They were asked to share the materials with all of their respective principals and staff, and were thanked for all of their support in the literacy effort.
