Ivy Tech Community College’s café renovation project at its East Chicago campus received a boost from the Horseshoe Hammond Casino.
The Horseshoe donated $25,000 to support the project.
“The renovation of the café at our East Chicago location would not have been possible without the financial support of our community partners,” said Louie Gonzalez, chancellor of Ivy Tech’s Lake County campus. “This donation by Horseshoe Casino helped us put the finishing touches on the upgrades to this space.”
He said the on-campus café provides a convenient place for students to eat, especially when pressed for time.
“This café will give them healthy, reasonably priced meal options,” Gonzalez said.
Kathryn Jenkins, Horseshoe Hammond senior vice president and general manager, said the donation assists the college with its efforts to train future workers. Ivy Tech students have worked for the casino’s dining operations.
“This donation will help ensure that we continue to cultivate top notch talent here in Northwest Indiana,” she said.
The Hammond casino has had a decade-long relationship with Ivy Tech. The casino’s donation covered costs for new café flooring, wall murals, window treatments, a podium, an added soffit to improve sound, as well as new furniture.
Ivy Tech’s Northwest and North Central Indiana campus locations include, East Chicago, Gary, Goshen, La Porte, Michigan City, South Bend and Valparaiso.
