Jobless rate falls in July as businesses reopen from pandemic

With more people returning to work as businesses reopen after months of shutdown or reduced operations, Indiana’s jobless rate also is showing signs of improvement.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development, citing Department of Labor statistics, reported Indiana’s jobless rate in July was 7.9%, down from 11.1% in June. The U.S. jobless rate in July was 10.5%, down from 11.2% in June.

The state’s jobless rate still has ground to make up to return to the July 2019 jobless rate, which was 3.5%.

Unemployment also showed improvement in some of the major metro areas of Northern Indiana. In April, the state's jobless rate was 16.9%.

The Elkhart-Goshen area jobless rate in July was 8.1%, down from 10.7% in June but up from 3.8% in July 2019.

The Gary area’s jobless rate in July was 10.6%, down from 14.6% in June but up from 4.6% in July 2019.

In the Michigan City-La Porte area, the jobless rate in July was 10.5%, down from 15.5% in June but up from 4.2% when compared to the same month a year ago.

The July jobless rate for the South Bend-Mishawaka area was 10.1%, down from 13.3% in June but up from 4.2% in July 2019.
