Comcast wrapped up its most recent project to bring fiber broadband to rural communities in Indiana.
The project in conjunction with the Indiana Broadband Office brought high-speed internet to more than 4,600 locations. Comcast laid 550 miles of fiber in Bartholomew, Carroll, Fayette, Hamilton, Johnson, Marshall and Morgan counties.
“Our goal is to ensure that every Indiana resident has access to high-speed, reliable, affordable Internet,” said Matt Ubelhor, Indiana Secretary of Transportation and Infrastructure, in a press release. “Connecting every corner of Indiana will require policymakers, community leaders, and service providers to work together to meet the growing needs of our residents and businesses – with this latest investment, Comcast continues to help us make that happen.”
Comcast also will continue to participate in the federal Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment program.
According to the Fierce Network, Comcast has received the most funding from the BEAD program at $745 million to bring fiber to 127,000 places in 25 states. It will use a blend of fiber and hybrid-fiber coax.
“Ensuring all Hoosiers can wield the full power of the internet continues to be a top priority for Comcast,” said Joni Hart, vice president of government and community affairs for Comcast Indiana. “There are residents and businesses who will now have access to reliable, high-speed internet for the first time – this build supercharges their possibilities at work, at school and at home.”
Comcast's investment in high-speed internet topped $634 million during the past three years, including a project in La Porte and Porter counties.
“La Porte County is more connected than ever because of the collaboration and recent investment from both internet service providers and government initiatives,” said Connie Gramarossa, president of the La Porte County board of commissioners, in a press release.
Comcast's Xfinity services are now available to 200 homes in both counties. That project benefited from the state's Next Level Connections Broadband Grant Program.
“The partnership between the Indiana Broadband Office and Comcast continues to be life changing,” Hart said.
