Elena Kutsugeras created a special haircut for a client that she didn't think would ever earn her an international nod. But the style earned her a spot in the Top 10 in the pixie/bixie category in the 2026 Behind the Chair Global Hair Awards.
“This cut wasn't created for a competition, it was created for my client,” said Kutsugeras, a stylist at the Vanis Salon & Spa in Valparaiso, in a press release. “Knowing that something made with so much intention and care has now been recognized on an international stage is incredibly humbling. It's a reminder that when you focus on creating your best work for the person in your chair, amazing things can happen.”
Judges noted her technical ability and creativity in the demanding category.
Sarah Juarez, a stylist at the Valparaiso location, was named a Top 100 finalist in the creative color category. She believes hair color is a reflection of her clients' personalities.
“For me, hair color is more than technique, it's a form of self-expression,” Juarez said. “Every client gives me the opportunity to create something unique, and being recognized as a Top 100 Finalist is an incredible reminder that creativity has no limits.”
Both stylists are in the running for the year's Top 25 stylists. Clients, friends and family are encouraged to vote here through Aug. 5.
“Elena has spent the past eight years serving guests and mentoring future professionals as an educator, while Sarah continues to push creative boundaries through her bold, artistic approach to hair color,” said Colleen Kaper, owner of Vanis Salon & Spa. “Their recognition on an international stage is a tremendous honor and a proud moment for the entire Vanis family.”
The Behind the Chair Hair Awards is an annual competition featuring stylists from 120 countries. Kutsugeras will attend the #ONESHOT Global Hair Awards on Aug. 24, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where the winners will be announced.
Vanis Salon & Spa has been serving clients for 40 years in their Schererville, Crown Point and Valparaiso locations.
