UPS now is operational at Gary/Chicago International Airport.
The Atlanta-based global logistics giant began daily air express service out of the Region airport on Nov. 2. The company announced in May it was expanding its air express network to the Gary airport to meet increased demand for next day delivery service.
“Chicagoland and Northwestern Indiana are important markets for UPS,” said Brendan Canavan, UPS Airlines president. “We’re pleased to add global air express flights from Gary, providing capacity and flexibility for businesses in the region.”
The UPS agreement with the Gary airport includes 14,000 square feet of office space in the terminal as well as a 150,000 square foot ramp, with enough space to park two Airbus A300s and an additional 5,800 square feet of hangar space.
Each weeknight, UPS aircraft will depart Gary for its global air hub in Louisville, Kentucky for destinations worldwide, according to airport officials.
UPS will staff about 60 people in Gary. Positions include ground handlers, administrative positions, aircraft maintenance technicians and management employees. Some will be current UPS employees who transfer to Gary, while others will be new hires which the company expects to begin filling soon.
