The American Meteorological Association recognized Valparaiso University professor Teresa Bals-Elsholz for her teaching ability.

The chair of the Valparaiso University meteorology department was honored with the 2024 Edward N. Lorenz Teaching Excellence Award.

The annual award honors a professor who shows “innovative and engaging teaching, making challenging curricula accessible and enjoyable, enthusiastic career-long mentoring, and inspiring the next generation of atmospheric scientists, especially empowering women,” according to the award description. 

“I really love getting to that ‘a-ha!’ moment with students,” Bals-Elsholz said in a press release. “I am very proud and happy that I have been able to teach so many Valpo meteorology students, and especially to so many women meteorologists.”

She will received the award at the 2024 annual AMS meeting next year in Baltimore.

Bals-Elsholz has been teaching at the university for 23 years. The professor also contributed to publications such as the “Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology” and the “Journal of Climate.”
