SOUTH BEND – The South Bend Silver Hawks have signed an agreement that will keep the minor league baseball team in South Bend for the next 20 years.

Owner Joe Kernan, a former Indiana governor, said the agreement was need in order to sell the team to Chicagoan Andrew Berlin, an investor in the Chicago White Sox. Terms of the sale include a $75,000 payment from the Silver Hawks and attendance bonuses that could bring in more money to the city.

Berlin has told the South Bend Parks Department, which is responsible for Coveleski Stadium, he is willing to pay for improvement to the ball park.

The change in ownership needs approval from both Major League Baseball and the Midwest League.
