The second Porter County Construction & Skilled Trades Day will take place Sept. 4 in Valparaiso.
The event is hosted by the Center of Workforce Innovations and the Construction Advancement Foundation. The two organizations aim to strengthen the pipeline to skilled trades for young adults in Northwest Indiana.
The event offers young people an opportunity to meet with representatives from various unions and skilled trades. Attendees can gain a better understanding of the skilled trades career pathways available.
“It is a good thing for youth to be exposed to the various trades and the different options outside of a typical four-year degree,” said Kevin Comerford, Construction Advancement Foundation director of professional development, in a press release.
Up to 16 trades organizations are bringing equipment and technology. They are creating mock worksites for young people, including over 600 students from high schools and career and technical programs across the Region. Attendees will be able to participate in hands-on activities with the chance to build and create.
“Providing these types of opportunities to our youth can open doors and serve the needs of both the student and the unions in a time when labor is needed more than ever,” Comerford said.
The Porter County Construction & Skilled Trades Day is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Porter County Expo Center in Valparaiso.
