The Brass Idol restaurant was hoping to open this week, but “unforeseen circumstances” have caused a delay in the grand opening.
According to the restaurant's Facebook page, they need a few more weeks to prepare and plan a July 1 opening in the old “JJ's building” in Gary.
Chef Daryn Frank, who has 20 years of experience in the industry, is planning a menu of comfort food made in house with ingredients sourced locally. The menu will be updated on its website before the public opening.
The Brass Idol will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant’s website describes the food as “classic Rust Belt favorites with a touch of fun and slightly rebellious edge.”
The restaurant at 5900 Miller Ave. is in the heart of the Miller Beach neighborhood. The restaurant includes some of the original elements, like its fire-singed walls, and added a collection of art, murals and handcrafted details.
The Brass Idol pays homage to the spirit of Gary with a name that symbolizes resilience and inspiration. Chef Frank said he draws parallels between ancient brass sculptures and the city of Gary, highlighting their ability to withstand the test of time.
“We are thrilled to finally share The Brass Idol to the Miller Beach community and beyond,” Frank said in a press release. “Our goal is to create a warm, inviting space where guests can enjoy good food and drinks, have fun and create lasting memories.”
Gary’s Miller Beach neighborhood is at the southernmost point of Lake Michigan. The walkable downtown features shops, art, restaurants and street murals.
