The Michigan City Police Department will receive $180,000 to upgrade technology and equipment.

The upgrades will improve efficiencies within the police department and enhance officers’ efforts to investigate and solve crimes. The city plans to use the grant funding to purchase Automated License Plate Readers.

Rep. Frank Mrvan’s request for Federal Community Project Funding for the Michigan City Police Department was approved in the Fiscal Year 2024 Appropriations law.

“We appreciate Congressman Mrvan’s commitment to public health and safety in Michigan City,” Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch said in a press release. “This grant will allow us to continue improving our use of technology and keeping our community and residents safe.”

Michigan City Police Chief Marty Corley also thanked Mrvan for supporting the police department’s crime fighting efforts.

“Congratulations to Mayor Nelson Deuitch and all of the leaders with the Michigan City Police Department on the success of this collaborative effort to ensure law enforcement officers have the technology and equipment they need to keep our communities safe,” Mrvan said.

Mrvan vowed to continue supporting law enforcement officers and securing the funding and resources they need to protect themselves and the Region.

Community Project Funding allows members of Congress to request funding for projects that benefit the communities they represent. Mrvan’s requests also included funding for police departments in Hammond, Gary, Merrillville and Munster.
