Gary school district names new leadership team members

Gary Community School Corp. recently announced new members to its administrative leadership team.

During a special meeting July 31, Linda Zaborowski was hired as the chief financial officer.

“Linda is an accomplished and results-oriented financial professional with 17 years of distinguished experience in nonprofit finance,” said GCSC Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Stokes in a press release. “She is recognized for developing and executing comprehensive budgets and timelines, and for leading cross-functional teams to surpass organizational objectives.”

Zaborowski is tasked with analyzing the district's finances and proposing any fixes that are warranted.

Zaborowski, who is a native of Northwest Indiana, previously served as deputy treasurer in the Griffith Public School and treasurer in the School Town of Muster.

Hank Kilander was promoted to athletic director. He has been the district’s athletic coordinator since December 2020. During his tenure, he spearheaded upgrades in facilities, a new conference affiliation and the reboot of baseball and softball.

Before that, he worked at Merrillville High School. Kilander previously worked as an assistant coach at East Chicago Central High School in football, basketball, baseball, golf and wrestling. He attended Crown Point and Cathedral High Schools. Kilander earned his bachelor's degree from Calumet College.

Jovanka Cvitkovich was named the district’s director of human resources. She has experience in sales, teaching, entrepreneurship and personnel and legal matters. She has helped organize job fairs to support the hiring of personnel.

Cvitkovich previously worked in the Duneland and East Chicago schools, and most recently worked in the Hammond Schools as the executive director of exceptional learners. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Purdue Northwest, a master’s degree in special education from Indiana University Northwest and a master’s degree in leadership from Western Governors University.

Dee Etta Wright was named the district’s chief operating officer. She has over 35 years of educational leadership experience. She previously served as a superintendent, a middle school and high school principal and a science teacher in East Chicago schools. For the past two years, she has worked as an administrator in the Merrillville Community School Corp.

Wright earned bachelor’s and a master's degrees in education from Indiana University Northwest. She also earned 30 additional graduate credits beyond a master’s degree from various universities and an EdS from Indiana Wesleyan University.

The Gary Community School Corp. is the largest education service provider for grades pre-K through 12 in the city of Gary. The district serves 10,700 students. It operates 11 elementary schools, three secondary academies, a middle school and preschool.
