MERRILLVILLE – The Sierra Club issued a statement praising Northern Indiana Public Service Co. for its effort to develop clean energy programs.

NIPSCO has asked the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to allow it to create a feed-in tariff program that allows customers that install wind and solar generation systems to sell electricity they generate to the utility.

“We recognize the important role these programs play in promoting further renewable energy and economic development opportunities in northern Indiana. The Sierra Club was critical in helping customers with solar, wind, hydro or biomass systems and make renewable energy a financially viable investment,” said Jimmy Staton, CEO of NIPSCO.

“Following NIPSCO’S filing, we are already seeing solar projects moving forward from Valparaiso to Goshen. The feed-in tariff creates innovative incentives for businesses and citizens to provide clean, renewable energy in Indiana,” said Steve Francis, chairman of the Hoosier Chapter of the Sierra Club.
