Michigan City has plotted out another course to guide its long-term economic prosperity.
The Economic Development Corporation Michigan City, Indiana recently finalized a long-term strategic economic development initiative – An Agenda for Economic Prosperity- highlighting action items, which it hopes translates to a “local sustainable business environment and economic prosperity and equity for all residents.”
This is the second strategic plan EDCMC has implemented in recent years.
The first plan, which covered 2013-2018, is credited by city officials for several efforts including annexing 426 acres of land near I-94 for future development. Michigan City also saw more than 3,381 new and retained jobs and $356 million in new investment during that time.
“This long-term strategic initiative will establish (an) atmosphere of optimism, confidence and create an environment of job creation and economic growth that will be of the upmost importance for Michigan City residents,” said Mayor Ron Meer. “There is a strong cooperation between the Economic Development Corporation Michigan City and city of Michigan City to improve high skills- high wage job opportunities in Michigan City and encourage reinvestment in Michigan City.”
The city and EDCMC in December announced it was preparing another strategic plan. Roderick Miller, president and CEO of Ascendant Global Consulting was hired for the project.
The plan focuses on workforce development/talent attraction; placemaking or essential elements needed to attract and retain talent to Michigan City; aggressive storytelling or describing why Michigan City is a place for economic opportunity; economic modernization or describing efforts underway to transform Michigan City in a community for a new generation by fusing its industrial roots with emerging business sectors.
