MERRILLVILLE – Enrollment for federal assistance programs for low-income household has begun for winter heating programs and Northern Indiana Public Service Co. is encouraging its customers who was financially challenged to consider payment assistance. During the 2011-12 heating season, 36,000 NIPSCO customers received assistance from the federal program, compared to 50,000 customers in previous years.
MUNSTER – Citizens Financial Bank has announced its net income for the third quarter was $1.3 million. Net interest income was $10.2 million, down 5 percent from one year ago. At the end of September, Citizens Financial has $1.1 billion of assets. The bank has 20 offices in Northwest Indiana and the Chicago suburbs.

EAST CHICAGO – Safety-Kleen’s re-refinery plant in East Chicago has been acquired by Clean Harbors Inc. of Norwell, Mass., for $1.25 billion. Safety-Kleen is based in Richardson, Texas, and besides the East Chicago plant, which has 80 employees, has 200 other plants in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Corporate wide, Safety-Kleen has 4,200 employees.
