Harvest Hangout earns small business accolade

The Harvest Hangout Play Café only opened in September, and it already is earning statewide notice.

The gathering spot in Goodland will be honored May 8 during the 2026 Small Business Impact Awards, presented by the Indiana Small Business Development Center, an Indiana Office of Commerce program. The awards celebrate Gov. Mike Braun's declaration that May 4 through 8 is Small Business Week in Indiana.

The cafe will be presented with the Main Street Small Business of the Year award.

Mirahida Kindig and Zahira Montoya, co-owners of Harvest Hangout, credited the organization, along with others, with helping them get started.

“We’ve been incredibly supported by our families, friends, local leaders and community members who encouraged us, volunteered their time and believed in our vision,” the sisters said in an Entrepreneurship Q&A. “Organizations like the Newton County Economic Development Commission, the Northwest Indiana Small Business Development Center and the Goodland Town Council have also guided and supported us along the way. Their involvement and trust, combined with the personal support from our community, have been foundational to The Harvest Hangout.”

A statement from Indiana Gov. Mike Braun's office said the cafe is designed to bring families and the community together.

“Our goal is to continue growing The Harvest Hangout as a community hub by expanding partnerships with local businesses, hosting creative and inclusive events, and continually elevating the quality of our offerings — while staying rooted in connection and community impact,” they said.

The ISBDC chose the eight 2026 Small Business Impact Awards honorees based on their work with the organizations.

“This week – and every week – we celebrate Indiana small businesses that are creating jobs and driving our economy,” said Secretary of Commerce David Adams. “As a state, we are committed to providing the programs and resources needed to inspire continued entrepreneurship and support the growth, technological advancements and success of our small businesses.”

The governor also announced the launch of Keep IN, a statewide initiative that will provide resources for small business owners. The Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation spearheaded the program.

“Keep IN is about helping Indiana business owners plan ahead and make informed decisions about the future,” said Brian Schutt, Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation director. “By starting earlier and increasing access to information, we can help support stronger outcomes for business owners, employees and local communities.”
