Entrepreneurship Q&A
For the first in Northwest Indiana Business Magazine‘s series on entrepreneurship, we feature Troy Turner, a U.S. Navy and Marine Corps veteran and owner of Right at Home Northwest Indiana.
Right at Home Northwest Indiana provides in-home care services for seniors and adults with disabilities in Merrillville and Valparaiso. The company employs over 100 caregivers across Lake, Porter and La Porte counties.
Q: What is your mission statement?
A: “To improve the quality of life for those we serve.”
Q: What was the catalyst for the business?
A: “Experiences being a family caregiver to my first wife, Stephanie, and my mother-in-law Gloria. Sometimes we learn the most from our most difficult and tragic moments that occur when taking care of our loved ones.”
Q: What is your background/education?
A: “After spending 10 years serving in the military, I worked in sales and marketing leadership roles for Eli Lilly and Batesville Casket Co. for over 20 years. I left the corporate world to chase my entrepreneurial dreams and work side-by-side with my wife, Sandra.”
Q: When did you open?
A: “We took over an existing business in February 2020 and just passed the 10-year anniversary for our office in April 2025.”
Q: What is a goal for the future?
A: “To continue providing exceptional service to clients and creating a work environment that enables our caregivers and staff to stay and grow with us long term.”
Q: What goal have you accomplished so far?
A: “Our biggest challenge was entering a new business just days before COVID-19 hit. Let’s just say that there were plenty of new learning opportunities for us during our first 18 months in business. Winning the Caring.com Super Star Award for the eighth consecutive year last year is one of our biggest team accomplishments. This award is earned based on client reviews. This award also reflects the great team of caregivers and staff who interact with our clients daily.”
Q: Who helped you along the way?
A: “There have been numerous people who have helped us along the way. Our staff, family, business coaches, other Right at Home business owners and previous business mentors have been instrumental in our success. … We have first-hand experience with the challenges our families face and work continuously to make the journey a little easier.”
Q: What book, movie or TV show inspired you?
A: “I love reading, especially on topics related to leadership. One of my favorites of all time: ”The Energy Bus,' by Jon Gordon. It’s a nice short story that reminds one of the importance of a positive mindset and great rules for everyday living. My favorite read this year, especially those of us who are over thinkers, is ‘Don’t Believe Everything You Think,' by Joseph Nguyen. I have given 25 copies of this book out to friends and family this year. The book offers some very useful tips on creating the life we all want and deserve.”
Q: What is your favorite inspirational quote?
A: “A life is not important; except in the impact it has on other lives.” – Jackie Robinson
