Ivy Tech lays off 200 workers; freezes tuition

According to multiple news outlets, Ivy Tech Community College laid of 202 people statewide in June.

A memo from President Sue Ellspermann said the layoffs affected full- and part-time workers.

An Indiana Capital Chronicle story reported that 5,3% of full-time staff were laid off between the systems 45 Indiana locations. Ten people from the Valparaiso campus and 13 from the Lake County campus were part of the layoffs.

The cuts come as the state faces a $2.4 billion loss of revenue during the next two years, according the Gov. Mike Braun's office.

“Out of all state entities, our higher education institutions are in the best financial position to weather these cuts, as state funding represents just one of the revenue streams — and institutions hold strong financial reserves,” said Gov. Braun in a press release. “Higher education institutions should address the reductions in the same way as other state entities: by refocusing on their core missions, finding efficiencies, eliminating redundancies and identifying ways to streamline the delivery of higher education.”

The Ivy Tech Community College State Board of Trustees did freeze tuition and fees through the 2026-2027 academic year, according to a press release.

Tuition for in-state students will continue to be $2,577.11 per semester for those enrolling in 12 or more credit hours.

The decision to keep tuition comes on the heels of Gov. Mike Braun's recommendation to keep tuition and fees flat. The Indiana Commission for Higher Education concurred with the governor in May.
