The Higher Learning Commission affirmed Purdue University Northwest as a doctoral-granting institution.

The change occurred in tandem with the university's expansion of its doctoral programs. PNW will offer three doctoral programs: doctorate of psychology, doctorate of technology and doctorate of nursing practice.

“Besides signifying a high mark of academic excellence, the expansion of applied doctoral programs at PNW helps meet needs that are important to our local communities,” said Kenneth Holford, PNW chancellor, in a press release. “Students accepted into these programs will be rigorously challenged, distinguished by their credentials upon graduation and be well-qualified to deliver impactful change needed in our metropolitan region.”

PNW will begin offering its doctorate of psychology program in fall 2024. The program will help prepare students as practitioners and scholars to address the needs for mental health resources in Northwest Indiana.

PNW started offering its doctorate of technology program in spring 2023. The program allows students to expand and apply knowledge and research to solve practice-based problems in technology-related fields.

PNW has offered a doctorate of nursing practice since 2015. The program focuses on translation science. Nurses who earn this degree are prepared to lead transformative health care.

Purdue University Northwest has campuses in Hammond and Westville. The university offers over 70 areas of study for undergraduate and graduate students. The two campuses serve about 8,900 students.
