Indiana’s jobless rate is falling as more people return to work from pandemic-related shutdowns or reduction in operations.
However, as unemployment numbers fall, data shows more people are out of work when compared to numbers a year ago. The Indiana Department of Workforce Development, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics data, shows the state’s jobless rate for September at 6.2%, down from 6.4% in August.
The state’s labor force in September was 3,328,250, with 3,134,198 employed and 194,052 unemployed. In September 2019, the state’s labor force was 3,374,024, with 3,278,034 employed, and 95,125 out of work.
Indiana’s jobless rate in September 2019 was 3.2%.
In some of the state’s metropolitan areas, jobless rates also showed some improvement.
The September jobless rate in the Elkhart-Goshen area was 5.3%, down from 6.1% in August, but up from 2.8% in September 2019.
The Gary area’s jobless rate was for September was 7.9%, down from 8.7% in August, but up from 3.9% in September 2019.
The Michigan City-La Porte area jobless rate in September was 7.1%, down from 8.5% in August but up from 3.5% in September 2019.
The South Bend-Mishawaka area’s jobless rate in September was 7.3%, down from 8.3% in August but up from 3.3% in September 2019.
