U.S. Steel releases report

Findings from a report released by Pittsburgh-based United States Steel Corp. illustrate the company’s economic impact on Indiana.

The report demonstrates the company’s role in the state’s economy, workforce and communities. The analysis, conducted by Parker Strategy Group, shows that in Fiscal Year 2024, U. S. Steel generated $1.8 billion in total economic impact. The company supported 8,402 jobs statewide and contributed $67.4 million in state and local tax revenue.

“Indiana has been at the heart of U. S. Steel’s story for more than a century,” said David Burritt, U.S. Steel CEO, in a press release. “Gary Works has been a cornerstone of American steelmaking since 1908, and today it continues to power the state’s economy while supporting thousands of good-paying jobs.”

Additional numbers include:

  • $1.2 billion value added to Indiana’s economy
  • 401 Indiana-based suppliers engaged
  • $2.7 million in community impact, including corporate giving, employee donations and over 61,000 volunteer hours

“The Nippon Steel investment in U. S. Steel is a historic opportunity to enable advanced steelmaking at Gary Works, creating new livelihoods for the next generation of workers, who along with all Hoosiers will benefit from the company’s strategy of uniting economic growth, community investment, workforce opportunity and sustainability,” Indiana State Senator Hal Slager said.

In 2024, U.S. Steel supported local programs such as Save the Dunes and sponsored regional events including the Gary Airshow and the Portage Festival of Lights.

“When I think of U. S. Steel and Methodist Hospitals, both organizations are pillars of the Northwest Indiana community and we each take that responsibility to heart,” Matt Doyle, Methodist Hospitals president and CEO, said. “What I love about the relationship between our two organizations is that neither one of us needs to be in the spotlight or the forefront of the effort—it’s about the impact.”

The study highlighted a point-in-time impact (FY2024) of U. S. Steel’s presence in Indiana.

“This first Indiana analysis shows just how deeply U. S. Steel shapes the state’s economy and communities—supporting more than 8,400 jobs, investing in 401 Indiana-based suppliers and generating millions in tax revenue that funds schools, infrastructure and essential services,” Nichole Parker, Parker Strategy Group, managing principal, said.
