IU Northwest celebrates 60th commencement

Indiana University Northwest's 60th commencement ceremony showed a varied student body from 19 to 72 years old.

The university in Gary conferred 647 degrees May 15. The Class of 2026 earned 51 associate degrees, 490 bachelor’s degrees and 106 master’s degrees.

Nursing was the most popular, with 68 students receiving a Bachelor of Science in nursing.

“To reach graduation, they dug deep, worked hard, and overcame the obstacles life threw at them,” according to the IUN website.

Thirty percent of graduating students were first generation, and 74% were female. Most students were residents of Indiana representing 22 counties. The 4% not from in state, students came from 13 states and seven countries.

Almost half of students were older than 25.
