The South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority is expecting 2,000 people to converge on Hammond this weekend for the inaugural Region American Taekwondo Association Class B Tournament.

“When you think of the Hammond Sportsplex, you probably think soccer, basketball or volleyball,” said Megan Goodan, SSCVA chief sports and leisure officer. “We are excited to host this emerging, martial arts sport right here in Northwest Indiana!”

Organizers are expecting 500 competitors and 1,500 spectators at the Hammond Sportsplex and Community Center.

Ann Marie Coglianese, who is the Region ATA owner and CEO, is a lifelong Indiana resident.

“I am honored to be hosting this event in Hammond with the South Shore CVA,” said Coglianese in a press release.

Grand Master MK Lee, who is a 9th degree black belt and the current acting grand master of the International ATA, will be a special guest.

Events start at 8 a.m., with the last one at 2 p.m.
