East Race Market celebrated its grand opening in downtown South Bend with a ribbon cutting ceremony Jan. 11.

The opening provided attendees with an opportunity to explore the new full-service grocery store. They were able to meet local vendors and take advantage of special sales.

The grocery store is on the ground floor of the new LaSalle apartment complex at 350 E. LaSalle Ave. in the East Bank neighborhood.

East Race Market offers a blend of private label and national brands, similar to Trader Joe’s and Aldi. They have fresh and pre-packaged groceries, dairy products, over-the-counter medicine, organic items and pet care items.

East Race Market is owned and operated by David Matthews of Matthews LLC.

“We are proud to introduce East Race Market to the South Bend community,” said Matthews in a press release. “This project aligns with our vision at Matthews LLC of creating spaces that enrich the lives in our community. The market is a step toward a more connected and enjoyable urban living experience, and we are excited for everyone to be a part of it.”

Downtown South Bend is home to an array of shops, restaurants and cafes. The downtown area also offers theatres, museums and parks. South Bend is on the St. Joseph River.
