JPMorganChase offered seniors in Gary's Miller Beach area tips about avoiding scams and safety tips to keep from falling for them.
Eighteen local seniors attended the June 30 event at Chase's Miller branch. It focused on fraud, especially in the age of artificial intelligence. Some scams to watch out for include AI-cloned voices and romance schemes that target lonely adults.
Chase also highlighted new new FBI data that shows Americans older than 60 lost $7.7 billion to scams last year. Indiana seniors lost $81.5 million alone.
Chase Community Manager Tammi Davis led the workshop and offered these tips:
- Don’t be persuaded by urgency or threats demanding immediate action
- Don’t trust caller ID alone, since scammers can spoof phone numbers and even use AI-powered voice cloning
- Be cautious of unsolicited calls, texts or emails, especially messages that request personal or banking information or include unexpected links.
- Set a “safe word” to verify emergency requests
- Consider adding a trusted contact person who may be contacted about unusual account activity
- Report suspected scams immediately by contacting a senior's bank and reporting the incident to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
Chase offered the community workshop in recognition of Elder Abuse Awareness Month in June.
