U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan requested Community Project Funding in the House versions of the fiscal year 2024 appropriations measures.

“I am grateful that a transparent process was established for all members to include eligible projects in the House appropriations measures, and believe that this process is an essential component of our ability to advocate for economic growth and success in our districts,” Mrvan said in a press release. “As we move forward, I will continue to work with all of my colleagues to move these measures forward and complete this Constitutional responsibility as soon as possible.”

Requested projects for the first congressional district include:

• $2 million — Calumet Region Environmental Infrastructure: funding for partnerships between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the communities in Lake and Porter countiest.
• $998,000 — Burns Waterway Small Boat Harbor: funding to assist with operations and maintenance at Burns Waterway Small Boat Harbor.
• $2.5 million – Michigan City Harbor: funding to assist with operations and maintenance at Michigan City Harbor.
• $264,000 — Gary Police Department: funding to help buy stationary LPR camera devices and mobile trailer units.
• $963,000 — Town of Merrillville: funding to assist the Merrillville Police Department’s radio replacement project with the purchase of emergency communication equipment.
• $180,000 — Michigan City Police Department: funding to acquire license plate readers.
• $215,000 — Town of Munster: funding to purchase and upgrade technology and equipment used by the Munster Police Department.
• $350,000 — City of Hammond Police Department: funding to upgrade and enhance the department’s video surveillance/license plate reader system.
• $963,000 — Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana Inc.: funding for the purchase and installation of a new mission control simulator to upgrade existing technology.
• $959,752 — City of Valparaiso: funding to help with the stormwater quality and detention project.
• $959,752 — City of La Port: funding to help the city’s efforts to replace combined sewers with new separate sanitary and storm sewer facilities and a storm sewer extension.
• $3.5 million — Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority: funding to assist with the construction and expansion of a heavy cargo logistics apron for multiple users.
• $1 million — City of Michigan City: funding to help with construction and upgrades to Fedder’s Alley All-Inclusive Playground and Fitness Park project.
• $500,000 — City of Portage: funding to help with additional phases of the Central Avenue reconstruction project.
