Popcorn not only news at Opportunity Enterprises’ gala

Opportunity Enterprises did more than fundraise at its 33rd annual gala May 9 at Blue Chip Casino in Michigan.

Neil Samahon, CEO of the Valparaiso-based nonprofit, made several big announcements in front of an elegantly dressed audience of about 700 supporters. One of the developments referred to a popular snack, the other shows just how committed OE is to continuous improvement.

The first was welcomed with much applause. OE's popcorn business will soon have a new name: Front Row Popcorn.

“We believe were are on the cusp of meaningful growth,” Samahon said.

The shop, which first opened in 2007 as the Simply Amazing Market, sells popcorn, fudge and other treats. In 2023, The shop was rebranded as Do Goodies to help put the sweets on retailer shelves.

The plan worked, and the gourmet treat started appearing on Strack & Van Til shelves in spring 2024. The tuxedo twist popcorn flavor was so popular, it was one of the products included in the 2025 Indiana Grown Holiday Gift Box.

The other announcement was hard won. OE was awarded three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

“This accreditation reflects the strength of our entire organization,” said Neil Samahon in a press release. “It is a direct result of the commitment from our staff, leadership and board to provide high-quality, person-centered services.”

CARF evaluators were on site to talk with staff, clients and stakeholders to conduct the survey. It noted that OE has strong community connections and support, which make it unique.

Chris Campbell, president of Centier Bank, said during his presentation that partnering with OE just makes sense.

“(OE) is perfectly aligned with (Centier's) servant heart culture,” he said.

The night included a special video, highlighting one participant's journey to finding a job. OE offers job coaching and workforce support.

“Inclusion isn't just an idea, it's a workforce,” Samahon said.

Opportunities Enterprises was founded in 1967 to help people with physical and intellectual disabilities fully participate in the communities where they live.
