Crossroads YMCA to expand in Hobart

The Crossroads YMCA is partnering with the City of Hobart and Powers Health on plans for a new YMCA.

The facility will occupy space on the St. Mary’s Medical Center campus in Hobart. The Powers Health hospital at 1500 S. Lake Park Ave. became part of the system in 2001. It opened in 1973.

The timeline for opening the new YMCA is pending the results of the planning process, which includes funding, building design and programming. The facility will include about 70,000 square feet of space for health, wellness, recreation and family programming.

“This is about more than constructing another building: the vision is to create a community destination where children can learn and grow, families can spend time together, adults can improve their health and older adults can remain active and connected,” according to the Crossroads YMCA website.

Plans for the facility include:

  • Zero-depth family pool and lap pool
  • Warm-water instructional pool
  • Kids Club and Kids Zone
  • Multi-use gymnasium
  • Expanded fitness center
  • Indoor track
  • Lobby and café
  • Healthy living cCenter
  • Locker rooms and family changing spaces
  • Expanded group exercise studios
  • Space for activities like tumbling, gymnastics and ninja

Powers Health also will offer onsite primary care services.

A groundbreaking is tentatively planned for 2027, with a target opening date of early 2029. The new facility is expected to create about 200 jobs.

The future of the current YMCA facilty at 601 W. 40th Place is still under consideration.
