The City of Hammond approved a new restaurant and lounge near the downtown train station, which is under construction.

The department of redevelopment, which owns the parcel, issued a request for proposal and awarded Batiste Haywood the chance to redevelop the commercial spot at 475 Fayette St.

Haywood owned Tooties Chicken and Fish Hammond at 6022 Columbia Ave.

“I’m excited to open another eatery in my hometown, especially with all the momentum happening in downtown Hammond,” said Haywood in a press release. “There’s so much energy and growth taking place, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.

The restaurant, which will feature a full bar, will be close enough to walk to the new train station, which is on schedule to open in 2027. Officials broke ground on the station in April.

“I also love the location and the fact that I’ll be just steps away from the downtown train station,” Haywood said. “I think that proximity will be a great benefit for both my business and the community.”

Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. said the restaurant is part of building momentum for the downtown.

“Projects like this new development at 475 Fayette St. prove that investors and entrepreneurs see the immense potential in our city,” McDermott said. “Between the upcoming train station and continued residential and commercial growth, Hammond’s downtown is truly transforming into a premier place to live, work and play.”

The proposed restaurant will be open seven days a week. A ribbon cutting is pending.
