VA official to speak at Purdue Calumet

            HAMMOND – L. Tammy Duckworth, assistant secretary for public and intergovernmental affairs for the Veterans Administration, will be the guest speaker at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, for Purdue University Calumet’s Disability Awareness Month. The presentation will be in the Student Union & Library’s Alumni Hall.

            Duckworth is a former Black Hawk helicopter pilot who flew combat mission in Iraq. In 2004, Duckworth was ambushed while on a mission and as a result, she lost both legs and partial use of one arm. She received the Purple Heart, Air Medal and the Combat Action Badge.

            “Ms. Duckworth will inspire and empower all people, with or without disabilities,” said Kimberly Trajkovski, Purdue Calumet’s assistant director of disability resources.
