SOUTH BEND – The St. Joseph County Airport Authority will commemorate retired Executive Director John C. Schalliol’s legacy with a cast bronze plaque to be permanently displayed in the Atrium at the South Bend Airport (SBN).
Schalliol began his 35-year career with the St. Joseph County Airport Authority in 1977 as the airport engineer, taking the helm as executive director in 1981. During his tenure, Schalliol managed more than $85 million in capital improvements and $20 million in land acquisitions. He was instrumental in attracting Piedmont Airlines and Allegiant Air to South Bend, both helping to lower airfares.
His vision to bring the South Shore Railroad onto Airport property created a multi-modal transportation hub for the region that is unique nationally. His efforts left the Airport positioned to serve as the transportation portal for the Michiana region well into the future.
Schalliol officially retired as the Airport’s Executive Director on Feb. 29, 2012.
