Nearly ten thousand people turn 65 every day. The 65 plus population is projected to more than double by 2050, from 40 million in 2010 to nearly 89 million in 2050. 1 For the first time, older Americans will outnumber younger Americans, putting a strain on the infrastructure and fabric of our communities. The 2013 Claim Your Age survey, conducted by Pfizer’s healthy aging initiative, Get Old, revealed a great concern that communities are not prepared for an aging population in terms of transportation, housing and medical facilities in all communities surveyed. The focus on retirement communities have shifted from warm beaches and tranquil settings to seeking communities with access to top hospitals, good public transportation and a booming economy.
According to AARP, people across the country define successful aging differently. Some people feel that finances are most important, while others just want to be healthy and happy. 2 However you define it, successful aging requires older adults to pinpoint their needs and seek out the right place to call “home” for the next chapter in their lives.
