Unemployment in Gary area increases in March

The jobless rate in the Gary metropolitan area in March increased when compared to February but that’s not the case for other areas of the state, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The Gary area’s jobless rate for March was 6.3 percent, up from 5.5 percent in February and up from 5.1 percent in March 2018, according to the state, citing data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Unemployment was down in the Michigan City-LaPorte area in March, which recorded a jobless rate of 5.6 percent, down from 5.9 percent in February but up from 4.9 percent in March 2018.

The South Bend-Mishawaka area jobless rate in March was 4.1 percent, down from 4.3 percent in February, but up from 3.8 percent in March 2018.

The Elkhart-Goshen area’s jobless rate in March was 3.2 percent, down from 3.4 percent in February but up from 2.4 percent in March 2018.

Indiana’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate in March was 3.6 percent, which is up slightly from the previously reported rate of 3.5 percent. The national jobless rate in March was 3.8 percent, which was unchanged from February.
