A Texas-based mattress manufacturer is investing $8.6 million to open a new production facility in La Porte, which will employ up to 350 people by 2023.

Corsicana Mattress, which operates 10 production facilities around the country, announced Aug. 19 it plans to open a new factory at 755 S 500 West in La Porte. The 165,000-square-foot facility, which is expected to open in December, will house the company’s domestic boxed-bed manufacturing operations.

“We have had significant growth in our boxed bed business and require a facility that is appropriately equipped with well-trained employees to provide the manufacturing efficiency to support that growth,” said Michael Thompson, chief executive officer of Corsicana Mattress. “Indiana was a great location for us and the local, regional and state agencies we worked with have been very helpful and welcoming throughout this process.”

Corsicana already is operating in the Region. It opened a temporary location on Woodland Avenue in Michigan City where it will hire and train new employees.

The company expects its new LaPorte site to produce more than 1,500 boxed beds daily, reducing lead times and increasing its same-day shipping capacity. Corsicana manufactures five brands including: NightsBridge, Early Bird, Renue, American Bedding and Sleep Inc..

The company said it selected La Porte for its proximity to foam suppliers and logistics companies, which is expected to reduce freight costs.

The company will receive up to $2.3 million in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job creation plans from the Indiana Economic Development Corp. The LaPorte County Council and County Commissioners also are offering additional incentives that include assistance with employee training.

“It is a great day to welcome Corsciana Mattress to the Hoosier state,” said Indiana Secretary of Commerce Jim Schellinger. “Indiana's strong history of manufacturing, central location, and skilled talent pipeline will set Corsicana up for success for generations to come.”

Sheila Matias, president of the La Porte County Commissioners, said landing Corsciana Mattress was a collaborative effort between economic development and elected officials.

“This is a home run for our economic development team … (which will bring) 350 new, good-paying jobs,” she said.

Corsicana operates a 100,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Aurora, Illinois. The factory in Illinois produces traditional, flat-packed mattresses and will continue operations.

Corsicana Mattress was founded in 1971 in Corsicana, Texas, south of Dallas. It employs about 950 people in the U.S.
