Michigan City-based Members Advantage Credit Union will host a free document shredding day June 22.

The credit union’s annual Shred Day is free to the community. The event aims to bring awareness to identity fraud prevention.

“Shredding confidential documents significantly reduces the risk of identity theft,” said Frank Beachnau, the credit union's president, in a press release. “Shred Day allows us to empower individuals to protect their personal information while also contributing positively to our community.”

Documents that are no longer needed and include sensitive information can be dropped off at the event.

Items that can be shredded include:

  • Tax information and returns
  • Investment records and statements
  • Insurance and utility bills
  • ATM and credit card receipts
  • Paycheck stubs
  • Bank statements
  • Cancelled checks
  • Personal documents
  • Credit card statements

The credit union has partnered with the Salvation Army to collect nonperishable goods for the community during the event.

Shred Day will take place from 9 a.m. to noon June 22 at Members Advantage Credit Union’s Michigan City branch. It is free and open to the public.

Members Advantage Credit Union is a nonprofit financial institution. Membership is available to anyone who lives or works in La Porte, Porter or Lake counties. The credit union has locations in Michigan City and Portage.
