The South Shore Line will implement its new train schedule starting May 14.

With the Double Track Northwest Indiana project almost complete, the new track will allow for 53 trains to and from Chicago.

“The final completion of double track allows for the addition of 14 weekday trains, revised times, reduced travel times, and new, limited-stop express service,” said Michael Noland, president of South Shore Line, in a press release. “In addition to new weekday trains, portions of weekend train times have also been modified to reflect improved travel times.”

The new schedule will offer express and local options. Express trains will provide expedited travel times from the following cities to Chicago:

  • Michigan City – 67 minutes
  • Dune Park – 57 minutes
  • Portage/Ogden Dunes – 51 minutes
  • Gary (Miller) – 46 minutes
  • South Bend – 109 minutes

The new schedule also will offer more service from the new Miller Station in Gary and the 11th Street Station in Michigan City; more rush-hour options; and bike access on all trains all year long at existing bike stations and the 11th Street, Portage/Odgen Dunes and Miller stations.

“We sincerely appreciate passengers’ patience and understanding throughout the construction, temporary busing and schedule revisions required in order to reach substantial completion of the double-track project,” said Nicole Barker, director of capital investment and implementation and Double Track NWI project manager.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District operates the South Shore Line between the Millennium Station in downtown Chicago and the
South Bend International Airport in South Bend. Find the new train schedule, effective May 14, here.
