Grand Rapids, Michigan,-based Bay Logistics recently purchased a 190,000-square-foot building in Michigan City to expand its reach into the Region.

Kurt Cuncannan, chief operating officer of Bay Logistics, said the location along the Interstate 94 corridor was a big reason for the acquisition.

The third-generation family-owned transportation, logistics and warehousing provider will use the site for trucking and warehousing. The site sits on 15 acres of paved land at 923 W. U.S. 20.

“Bay Logistics owns and operates over 3 million square feet of warehouse space. Our sister company MTS runs a fleet of 1,200-plus tractors and more than 3,000 trailers, and recently earned another Supplier of the Year designation by General Motors,” Cuncannan said in a press release from the Economic Development Corp. Michigan City. “Our new Michigan City operations will serve as a trucking terminal, truck/trailer maintenance shop, and a 180,000-square-foot public distribution center.”

Bay Logistics' expansion is in partnership with Martin Transportation Systems.

The company implemented an overall makeover of the building, including a new roof, interior and exterior painting, new HAVC system, fire suppression system, LED lighting, fence repairs and replacement, truck dock installations and parking lot upgrades.

Cuncannan said they also “invested heavily in IT systems.”

Michigan City Mayor Duane Parry said Michigan City continues to attract companies with growth potential.

“Our business landscape and connectivity to Michigan and Chicago continue to pave our way toward more momentum and additional growth,” Parry said.

Cressy Commercial Real Estate from Mishawaka served as the broker of record in the acquisition.

Bay Logistics has 10 employees but plans to increase hours and hiring more truck drivers and mechanics. The company owns and operates more than 3 million square feet of space in Michigan, Indiana, Arizona and Mexico.
