Tri-Township Schools marks tournament anniversary

Hoosier Hysteria is coming to the Tiger Den in La Crosse.

In honor of the 75th anniversary of the gymnasium billed as the “Best Homecourt in Indiana,” the Lady Tigers are hosting a two-day varsity tournament Jan. 2-3.

The competition will feature La Porte vs John Glenn at 6 p.m. followed by Tri-Township vs Wheeler at 7:30 p.m. The second night will feature a consolation game followed by the championship game.

The gymnasium was built in 1949. According to Tri-Township Schools, this will be the first varsity basketball tournament held in the Tiger Den since 1953. The court is 10 feet shorter than regulation, seats only 800 and offers the nostalgic feel of Hoosier basketball.

Tri-Township Schools Superintendent Dr. Paige McNulty expressed her excitement about the event.

“What a great way to kick off the New Year as we showcase the unique and historic characteristics of the Tiger Den while cheering our girls on to victory,” McNulty said in a press release.

Throughout the evening, long-time fans and past players will be honored along with a local hero who played in the first game at the Tiger Den in 1949.

Due to demand, tickets will be pre-sold only. Tickets can be purchased in the front office or at the ticket table during any home game before the tournament.

“Let’s pack the Tiger Den and make this 75th anniversary celebration unforgettable,” McNulty said.
