Larson-Danielson Construction renovated two buildings for the Town of Chesterton in 2025. Both required careful planning to modernize the town hall and fire department.
Larson-Danielson Construction based in La Porte was given the green light in April 2025 and began construction in May on the dual project.
The town hall project updated the structure built in the mid-20th century. Plans included better technology for audio-visual uses, space for 100 people to sit, new restrooms and office interiors, and a community room built for mixed uses.
“Working within an older building always presents challenges,” said David Merkel, vice president of Larson-Danielson, in a press release. “Strong coordination and a solutions-driven approach allowed our team to deliver a space that balances modern functionality with the character of the original structure.”
Chesterton's fire department upgrade included adding 1,730-square-foot of space. Interior work included more bunk rooms, new restrooms, a training room, and upgrades to the training, living and office areas, the kitchen, recreation and fitness spaces.
“Projects like this are about supporting the people who serve the community every day,” Merkel said. “We’re proud to partner with the Town of Chesterton to deliver facilities that improve operations, enhance accessibility, and provide long-term value for residents and first responders.”
Larson-Danielson worked with Kil Architecture & Planning based in South Bend, along with Chesterton's engineering staff, to control costs and oversee the project.
The town hall re-opened at the end of 2025, and a ribbon cuttinig Jan. 26 celebrated the fire department renovations.
