Northwest Indiana Business Magazine writer earns awards

Two Northwest Indiana Business Magazine stories placed in the 84th Mate E. Palmer Communications Contest presented by the Illinois Woman’s Press Association, an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women.

Patricia Szpekowski, president of PR Strategies & Communications/PmS advertising Inc., earned first place for “Marketing: Simple Client Engagement” in the August/September 2024 issue, and second place for “Financial Planning: Early Fiscal Lessons” in the June/July 2024 issue.

She also won seven other awards for her work in other publications.

“It is an honor to receive recognition for my work that highlights a very wide range of topics,” Szpekowski said. “Writing stories about successful businesses gives me the opportunity to showcase their amazing accomplishments.”

The IWPA contest is named for Mate E. Palmer, the ninth IWPA president, who served from 1907 to 1909. Upon her death in 1939, the IWPA established a writing contest in her memory. IWPA will celebrate with winners May 3 at The Public Landing in Lockport, Illinois.

PR Strategies & Communications Inc., an advertising agency and public relations firm based in Elgin, Illinois, was founded in 1987 by Szpekowski. She has been writing for the magazine since 2023.
