Merrillville-based MonoSol plans to layoff 45 workers at its La Porte facility, according to a WARN notice posted by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

A letter addressed to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters said the layoff was warranted because of a “decrease in demand for the company's products.” The notice said MonoSol expects the layoff to be temporary; however, it is anticipated to last two years.

Layoffs will begin Sept. 25 or within 14 days of that date.

Workers at the LaPorte plant agreed to a four-year contract in December after contentious negotiations that included a lockout of employees.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 135 represents workers.

MonSol said the collective bargaining agreement includes bumping rights.

MonoSol is part of Tokyo-based Kuraray Group, which develops specialty chemicals. MonoSol, which manufactures water-soluble technology, was founded in 1953.
