Powers Health sleep center now open

St. Mary Medical Center Sleep Medicine Services has started welcoming patients at a new Winfield location.

The sleep center is at Powers Health St. Mary Medical Center Outpatient Center, 10607 Randolph St.

“Quality sleep is crucial to good overall health,” said Janice Ryba, St. Mary Medical Center CEO, in a press release. “By bringing physician sleep specialists and advanced testing equipment to our Winfield location, Powers Health offers studies and analyses to help patients achieve restful sleep.”

Powers Health is an accredited member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The health care network also offers sleep evaluations at locations in East Chicago and Munster.

“Suffering from a sleep disorder can hinder people from living a healthy, full life,” Dr. Bilal Safadi, Powers Health pulmonary medicine and sleep medicine specialist, said. “Good sleep is essential to body and mind wellness.”

Sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy and circadian rhythm disorders are common sleep-related conditions. According to Powers Health, people experiencing daytime sleepiness, nightmares, obesity, teeth grinding, loud snoring, bed wetting and problems concentrating may benefit from a sleep study.

The new Winfield location features eight sleep evaluation rooms. The rooms resemble bedrooms, complete with a nightstand, desk, television and private bathroom.

While the patient sleeps, a technician monitors from an adjacent room. The sleep study findings are interpreted by a physician specializing in sleep medicine. The findings are shared with the referring physician and patient, along with recommendations for follow-up care.

Based in Munster, Powers Health is a nonprofit health care system. Powers Health is comprised of Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart and Powers Health Rehabilitation Center in Crown Point.
