Valparaiso-based Northwest Health recently released its annual community benefit report.

The report outlines Northwest Health’s contributions to the health of its patients. It also highlights the impact on the Region’s economy in 2023.

Last year, Northwest Health's network of hospitals and medical sites provided care for 933,400 patients.

As an employer and taxpayer, the health system’s economic impact on the Region totaled $433,933,000 in 2023. Northwest Health provided $79,482,000 in charity and uncompensated care for the community’s vulnerable individuals. The health system also donated to local food pantries and provided free health and wellness seminars.

“At Northwest Health we are dedicated to helping improve the health of people throughout the Region, working around the clock, every day of the year to help people get well and live healthier,” said Dr. James Leonard, CEO of Northwest Health – Porter, in a press release.

Last year, Northwest Health added a maternal-fetal medicine specialty to care for high-risk pregnancies. The system also began providing maternal-fetal transport to bring women experiencing pregnancy complications to a higher level of care at Northwest Health – Porter. The organization opened a new primary care office in Valparaiso and recruited 21 new providers.

In 2023, as part of its new graduate medical education program, Northwest Health welcomed its first class of family medical physical residents. The hospitals educated over 800 nurses and other clinicians. Northwest Health served as a teaching site for 12 colleges.

“The vital care we provide is only one part of our broad impact,” said Simon Ratliff, interim CEO for Northwest Health – La Porte and Starke. “We recognize that our services are essential and that we are committed to doing all we can to provide excellent medical care services and to make Northwest Indiana a healthier, better community for all.”

Northwest Health has hospitals in La Porte, Porter and Starke. The health care network includes outpatient medical centers, urgent care centers and surgery centers. Northwest Health has over 3,000 employees and over 700 physicians on its staff.
