Community Healthcare System is changing its name to Powers Health in honor of Donald Powers, who was a founder of the Community Foundation.

The name signifies a “strategic evolution” of the system's brand and identity, and will begin a new chapter July 1.

“We will continue to invest resources throughout Northwest Indiana by building new facilities and expanding services,” said Donald Fesko, CEO of Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana Inc., parent company of Community Healthcare System, in a press release. “With the support of some of the area’s most talented medical professionals, we are proud to have earned numerous national accreditations and distinguished recognitions for high-quality care and innovative technology.”

The new name offers the health system a distinct identity. Several healthcare systems in Indiana share “community” in their names.

Powers, along with four others, donated 5 acres of land and funding for Community Hospital. He was an original director and president of the foundation. It became the Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana Inc. in 2001.

Powers had a vested interest in bringing specialized health care to the Region. His wife was diagnosed with cancer and was unable to get the care she needed close to home.

The health system's hospital names will stay the same; however, the following facilities will be rebranded:

  • Community Stroke & Rehabilitation Center to Powers Health Rehabilitation Center
  • All location-based or hospital-based health center names to Powers Health Outpatient Center
  • Community Care Network Inc. to Powers Health Medical Group

The new name comes with a new logo and other branding. The health system said the name will not affect the availability of providers, and does not reflect an acquisition or merger.
