Franciscan Health Crown Point is hosting a symposium Nov. 7-8 to help individuals better understand trauma.

The symposium is designed for health care professionals, psychologists, social workers, first responders, students and anyone interested in learning more about addressing trauma-related issues.

“People rarely think of trauma care until they need it, but health care professionals know it is a vital part of the services we provide,” said Jennifer Homan, Franciscan Health Crown Point manager of trauma and injury prevention, in a press release.

Day one of the symposium will focus on psychological traumas. Day two will focus on physical traumas. The event includes presentations by trauma specialists and physicians. Presenters will discuss topics including burn care, trauma case reviews, pediatric trauma care, trauma care and using trauma informed care to decrease violence.

“Having healthcare providers who are trained to manage the many facets of trauma care is key to successful outcomes,” Homan said.

Kimble Richardson will serve as the keynote speaker for day one. He will speak about the 2021 Indianapolis FedEx mass casualty incident. A licensed mental health counselor, clinical social worker, therapist and addiction counselor, Richardson has 37 years of experience in the health care industry. He serves on the Indiana Behavioral Health and Human Services licensing board.

Dr. John Ruggero will serve as the keynote speaker for day two. Ruggero is a trauma surgeon and U.S. Navy commander. He will speak on the military and civilian intergeneration of trauma care. Ruggero has served as a U.S. Navy surgeon in Iraq and authored several studies on maintaining surgical skills.

The Trauma Symposium will take place 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 7 and Nov. 8 at the Design Barn in Hebron. Registration is due by Nov. 5. Breakfast, lunch and mid-session snacks will be provided. Learn more about the event here.
