The Mascot Hall of Fame in Whiting earned the designation of the No. 1 Pop Culture Museum in the nation by USA Today readers.

The museum was nominated in the 10Best Readers' Choice Awards.

In a story about the winners, USA Today wrote: “At this charming museum just a half-hour outside of Chicago, you’ll get to explore interactive exhibits and memorabilia honoring some of the most popular mascots of all time across numerous sports.”

The museum topped others that call much larger cities home.

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our team and the overwhelming support of our visitors,” said Karen Anaszewicz, executive director of the Mascot Hall of Fame, in a press release. “We strive to provide an unforgettable experience that celebrates the rich history and cultural impact of mascots in a fully interactive educational environment, and this award motivates us to continue pushing boundaries and inspiring future generations.”

Nominees for the categories were chosen by experts, editors and other sources.

The 25,000 square-foot facility opened in 2018 at Front and 119th streets near Lakefront Park in Whiting.
